Stephen Lloyd MP has been doing his bit to mark this week's Holocaust Memorial Day. As well as speaking in a debate in Parliament last Thursday, he has signed a Book of Commitment and co-sponsored an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons marking the occasion.
Friday January 27th will mark the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history - and in the weeks running up to the day, Stephen Lloyd MP has been active to ensure the day is well publicised.
In his recent speech in Parliament, Lloyd, who has himself visited Auschwitz, paid tribute to the extraordinary men and women who having survived the Holocaust, work to educate young people about what they endured. He also touched on a number of harrowing experiences which affected him when he visited the camp and learnt about what life was like there for those imprisoned there.
In the weeks around Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. Eastbourne's Jewish Community and Eastbourne Cultural Communities Network, supported by Eastbourne Borough Council will be marking the day with an event at the Town Hall on Holocaust Memorial Day.
Stephen Lloyd said: "I spoke in the debate in Westminster Hall on this important anniversary. For me and the other MPs the core strand which invited all our contributions were that we must continue to commemorate the Holocaust Memorial Day to honour those who perished in the concentration camps and also to remind ourselves how easy it can be for other dreadful atrocities such as what occurred in Rwanda, to happen again. We must remain ever vigilant and Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us of why our memory should never fade."
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: "We are proud that Stephen Lloyd is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year. It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust - as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of bigotry."
