Stephen Lloyd, Vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Town Centres, was the co-signatory to a motion which was debated in Parliament yesterday about the future of high streets and town centres in light of the Portas Review. The debate attracted a large number of MPs from all sides of the House who are concerned about the future of town centres.
Lloyd, who has been taking a lead nationally on the subject as a result of his experience in making progress with Eastbourne's own town centre, spoke passionately about the importance of town centres, not only as a place for trade and business, but also somewhere families and friends should be able to relax and enjoy themselves.
He also spoke about the bureaucratic hurdles he and Eastbourne Borough Council have faced in introducing a street market to Eastbourne's Terminus Road, and how progress was being made. The MP started the whole process soon after the General Election, it has now passed through the Cabinet at Council and its arrival is expected by the summer.
Stephen said: "I am totally committed to our Town Centre, not only because of the importance to jobs and employment, but also because I feel it should be a reflection of a town's character."
