AEGON International – discussions held over future of the event.

February 5, 2011 4:35 PM

Eastbourne and Willingdon MP, Stephen Lloyd, met senior executives from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), local councillors and members of the business community at the Houses of Parliament last week to discuss how to make this year's AEGON International the most successful yet for local tennis fans and businesses alike.

The meeting came in the week that the LTA announced a deal to host the tournament at Devonshire Park until 2013.

Christina Ewbank, the Chair of the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce said: "It was a really positive and productive brainstorming session. Everyone was obviously determined to do what they can to make the AEGON International even better and to increase its benefit to Eastbourne. I really appreciate Stephen bringing us all together, organising the event and constantly pushing us in the one direction - transforming Eastbourne's economy."

The event, which attracts many of the world's top male and female players, has been held in Eastbourne for the past 34 years.

Bruce Philipps, Communications and Commercial Director of the LTA added: "It's great to see all parts of the local political and business community so focused on one clear goal - to make this Eastbourne's event. Everyone recognises that it is an excellent opportunity to make the most of a world class tennis tournament for fans and for local business."

Stephen Lloyd MP said: "I know we have a great tournament. I also know that with this kind of joined up thinking and determined effort, and a little luck, we can make our tournament better than it's ever been and really grow Eastbourne's economic potential as well. We've all agreed an action plan. Now it's about making it happen."
